Hating job
Any of you in the same boat?

Work as an accountant for a small hedge fund and really want to do something different but have a wife and a kid, with another on the way. Very difficult to move industry or take a backward step. Anyone had same issues?

A little bit. In 2012 I finished 22 years in the RAF. Now doing an army security number which is basically being in the army without being sent away anywhere. Good benefits and secure but feel my skills are being wasted.

Easier said than done though SI.

I voluntarily ran an Adult Football League for 10 years as Secretary along side work and loved it even though it took up all of my spare time but you can't get that sort of work paid, it's just available as voluntary stuff.

Couple of years ago I did a lot of voluntary and supply stuff as a teaching assistant at a Special Needs School. Sadly it closed down because I loved doing that. Since then I have had so many Interviews for Primary/Special Needs Schools I have lost count but get pipped at the post by experienced females with loads of experience and qualifications every time.

The problem is there are training courses etc but it's a. finding the time and b. an awful lot of them are very expensive and there is no guarantee of a job at the end.

Friend of mine spent around 8 grand in the last few years training to become a counsellor. Can't find work now even though qualified.

I'd much rather be in a job I liked but it's a big risk when there are bills to pay!

Re: Hating job
We spend so much of our lives at work, if you really hate it that is pretty sad, maybe look at doing something different, its often looks more daunting that it actually is but when you do it you wonder why you worried about it, may seem like a risk but the easy option is to stay put and stay unhappy, look at the most successful people in life and you find most have had to take risks at some point, be it in business or changing jobs, changing City’s or even countries, rather than continue to hate your job, formulate a plan to change, what would be your ideal job? Then how are you going to get there? what steps do you need to take etc, then DO IT.

Re: Hating job
I hate my job. Public sector, working in housing - depressing, unrewarding and everything has a million hoops to jump through. No one makes decisions, every meeting just plans the next meeting and all you see is wasted money left right and centre whilst frontline services get cut.
But it pays the bills, and that's what counts for me right now

Joe C, good to hear you did that for a fellow citizen, as you said, could be anyone of us in that position one day.

You mentioned Lewisham, which made me think of my mate who was driving along Rushey Green Catford, when he noticed an old man fall to the pavement clutching his chest, my mate is a decent type and pulled over, tried to help him and called for help, someone called an ambulance, poor fella was dead before they arrived, died in my mates arms, most traumatic thing he has ever experienced, had a heart attack the paramedics said. At least he tried to help.

Trains seem to bring out the scumbag in people

On the train into work on Wednesday, there were line problems so they one i managed to catch was really busy and uncomfortably hot. As we left Lewisham, the bloke next to me passed out, hit his head on a handrail as he fell over and bounced towards me (and I caught him)

Out of a packed carriage, only two women helped me

Everyone else either turned away or just stared

Asked the bloke in the nearest seat if I could put this bloke in it and he looked at me as if I’d just spat on his mum. And of the two women that helped me, I could hear one of thems bloke saying “Don’t get involved, just leave it, stay out of it” etc

Helped the bloke off at London Bridge, and the two women (and that bloke) stayed with him while I went and found someone, and I came back and waited until the paramedics arrived. They took over and as we left, I asked that bloke what he was on about saying not to get involved. He said “Well you don’t know whats going on do you, he could have been off his head or something.” I pointed out it was a middle aged bloke in a suit and could easily have been him, if it had happened to him how would he have felt if someone else had been saying don’t get involved?

His response? “Yeah, whatever, fuck off”

Charming.

I really dislike about 99% of the public

Re: Hating job
I genuinely feel sorry for kids leaving school today. The education they have just received is so far detached from actual life it's pathetic.

In this "apparent" progressive culture of ours, we have a justice system that is shambolic, and supports the perpetrator not the victim, part of an entire generation who see fit to sit on their arse and not even so much as think to contribute something to society and pay some taxes. We have also found a ant-discrimination pigeon hole for every single part of society except the white tax paying male.

I gave up my seat for a 70 odd year old woman on the train last Wednesday. I was sitting next to some 17 year old kid who's only goal in life was to be "cool" by talking rasta shite on his phone so everyone could hear him. This woman walked the entire length of the carriage before I gave up my seat. Fucking disgraceful

Re: Hating job
Over buyer, that's a good post, thanks for sharing. I could just visualise the train commute. I have done some commuting, but not long term as moved back so solved that, now the kids have grown.

Unfortunately I lose out on seeing green pastures and an abundance of trees, peace and quiet, air and noise pollution. Living in a flat rather than a house. It is a trade off, one that I accept reluctantly. It has it's merits, everything on your doorstep (vagrants excluded) and minimal commuting.

Re: Hating job
Back to the OP - as an accountant it is very easy to move industry as it's effectively the same everywhere. We're lucky in that respect. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and do something about it. I just started a new job this week and have two very young sons.

Re: Hating job
Ted, its all relative.

It wasn't just the London dockers - men all over the Country were doing the same in steelworks, factories, coalmines etc.

How many women and kids had a miserable life as a result of the husband/father being so fucking pissed-off with his lot?

A few years after you Grandfather I worked in Millwall dock.
Got up at 6 am in Goodmayes made my way to the docks to start at 8 am finish at 5 pm but had compulsory overtime till 7 pm if Rail trucks arrived so possibly getting home at around 9 pm had some food and went to bed to go to work again the next day !!!!

Yep FMOB.

Re: Hating job
Eric - nobody said the world owes you anything, the fella just wants to do something different.

Different world now, compared to the times of our grand parents. My grandfather work outside at a steelworks for most of his working life, before the days when companies started to provide waterproofs and safety wear.

I agree with you about the materialistic, consumer-obsessive world we live in, but the fella isn't moaning about that.

Re: Hating job
A classic Gen Y statement. This world owes you fuck all. My grandfather hated work as well. He lined up at the dock gates every day hoping he would get picked for a days work so he could feed his family. That is called opportunity. We as adults make conscious decisions to have children, have morgages, get married etc etc and are accountable for them, despite what your schooling teaches you. If we was all doing the work we loved we all be playing for West Ham or flying space ships around Mars. Toughen the fuck up and get on with it.
